The Mooreabbey Milers are Tipperary’s newest athletics club based in the parish of Galbally and Aherlow in the Glen of Aherlow. The club train under the guidance of Tom Blackburn on Tues and Thurs every week rain, hail, sleet or snow at 7pm and have seen their numbers greatly increase over the year. A great favourite with many of their members is their Sun morning jog on the hills and roads surrounding the beautiful Glen of Aherlow. Also over the last number of weeks they have put on juvenile cross country training from 6 to 7 for the kids and this has been very successful thanks to all the coaches.
The success of the club is greatly due to its vibrant and enthusiastic members and a very active committee. They have competed in many events over the year in all the distances 10k, 10miles, half marathon, and marathon, even mountain running (where some of their members have competed in the world championships and brought home medals).
The club held their first event on Dec 31st last year. It was a mile race from the village of Galbally to the monument known as the Mooreabbey. It was a fantastic event for all the family on New Year’s Eve with mulled wine and mince pies for everyone afterwards. There were many competitive runners as well as fun runners and walkers, so they have decided to make it an annual event. Make sure to mark it on your calendar .(Dec 31st 2012,-1pm)
The course is accurately “ jones counter “measured this year and they have an A. A.I. permit. This could be a great way to test your mile distance and to monitor you’re improvement every year.
During the local Festival in August they successfully ran an 8k road race on a really nice course and intend to make it an annual event.
Their more resent outings at the county and Munster cross country championships have also proved successful, their juveniles have been well placed in the first ten and the ladies and men’s teams have had podium success.
The Mooreabbey Milers would like to thank all those who supported their endeavours in 2012, a special thank you to Shane Kelly of Tipperary pharmacy, Main Street, Tipperary who very kindly sponsored a First Aid kit for the club and would like to wish their members continued success.
